Two special awards were handed out for ‘Commitment to Community’ at this year’s Cootamundra Australia Day celebrations and they couldn’t have gone to two more deserving people in town.

MC of the breakfast Paul Braybrooks said nominations for local Australia Day honours were of a high calibre this year, before congratulating all recipients.

Bev Chalmers and Jenny Cash both received this recognition.

Breakfast in the Park MC Paul Braybrooks Bev ChalmersMrs Chalmers coaches forthe Cootamundra branch of the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), and has done so since the group formed in 1990.

She has dedicated 35 years to the organisation, never failing to put her hand up to keep the local organisation running.

She showscompassion for children and adults with special needs who utilise the service.

Mrs Chalmers had worked with physiotherapist, Kate Hamilton, who had children under her care who travelled to Wagga RDA.

Seeing the benefits, a local group was formed, which initially ran from Mrs Chalmers’ mother’s house in Florance Street using her own and borrowed ponies.

As a coach, Mrs Chalmers prepares lesson plans for each participant.

Riding for those who are severely disabled can be done without crutches, giving a sense of freedom and can improve posture, coordination and trunk balance.

Jenny CashFew women have community interests as diverse as Mrs Cash, who has lived in Cootamundra with husband Peter since 1994.

Through the winter months, she is a leader of the ‘Wrapped With Love’ group, which meets to knit and crochet rugs for those in need in Australia and overseas.

Jenny was a pioneer of the local branch of this group, her rug being the first one and last year more than 250 rugs were made.

Jenny has been very involved in Garden Club and has worked with the Cootamundra Shire to promote country living at Expos.
